Terri Schiavo

I just dont understand people sometimes. Im sure everyone has heard of Terri Schiavo- the poor woman down in Florida who has been in a coma for 15 years. After her heart temporarily stopped beating 15 years ago, she suffered severe brain damage and has never recovered. I guess after several years went by, her husband wanted to have her feeding tube removed. He said that he knew his wife would never have wanted to continue on in that state. Her parents obviously felt differently. So basically they have been fighting for the better part of 10 years now as to whether or not to let her die. Of course, Jeb Bush has gotten involved and has done everything he can to prevent the removal of the tube- even passing a law specifically designed to keep her alive. The State Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional. Huge legal and political battles have ensued, and how her parets have brought up charges of abuse and negelct, simply to keep her on life support. I just dont understand why anyone would want to keep her going in that condition. She has shown no signed of improvement since she fell into the coma, and doctors have no reason to believe she ever will. There are two possibilities here: 1) she is a complete vegetable without the capacity to mentally process any information at all- in which case she is basically already dead. 2) She is mentally coherent but without any control of her body whatsoever. Im sure this is not the case- doctors would be able to monitor her brain activity. But for arguments sake, well pretend she does have brain activity. Would anyone want to be kept alive under those circumstances? Not being able to move, eat, breath on your own- FOR 15 YEARS!? That to me would be hell. Complete and utter hell. I know there are people out there who say we shouldnt ever take a life, it is tantamount to murder, yadda yadda yadda. I only have one question for them: Would she still be alive if doctors werent keeping her that way? People are always saying that God decides when people are supposed to die, right? The way I see it, God DID decided, and we got in the way. Had this happened to her 50 years ago, shed be dead- does that mean that the doctors who would have treated her would be guilty of murder in the eyes of God simply because they didnt possess the technology to keep her alive? I guess what Im trying to say is that simply because we CAN keep someone like Terri alive- and I use that term loosely- it doesnt mean we SHOULD. There comes a time when you have to put those things aside and let nature take its course. Everyone dies sooner or later. Her journey here passed years ago- and it is now time for her parents to say their peace and let her go.
