Breaking news: Terri Schiavo finally dead. You may now return to your regularly programmed lives. That is how this has felt for the past week. It sickens me, even though I am just as guilty of it as everyone else- although since its been all over the news, there hasnt really been much else to think about. This whole tragic story has brought everything else in this country to a complete standstill. Other news? What other news? The entire US public has been sitting around like vultures waiting for this poor girl to die. I even imagine that somewhere out there, people were taking bets as to when her body would finally join her mind. Forget the NCAA tournament- weve got a death pool going! How does an entire country get so pre-occupied with the life of one person? And a person who cant even think, at that. Michael Schiavo was receiving death threats- as was judge Greer. Someone called the Hospice where she was staying and said that if she died, they were going to bomb the clinic...are these people as brain dead as poor Terri? How does killing other people in a futile attempt to save what so-called-life Terri had left justify anything? Lets see- you want to kill other people for letting someone else die as they wished to. Time to crumple some tinfoil onto that spiritual antenna of yours, because youre obviously getting pretty lousy reception. So while everyone was on the edge of their seats this week waiting for her heart to stop beating, believe it or not, life did go on, and the earth continued to revolve around the sun. The news that the intelligence commission released its assertion that everything we though about WMD in Iraq was dead wrong got virtually no press. WTF!?! Are our priorities that far out of whack? Over 1,500 US troops have died in Iraq because of faulty, fabricated intelligence, but the big news is that a 41 year-old brain dead woman in Florida stopped breathing. What really sickens me about all of this more than anything else though, is that her parents, albeit grief stricken, were parading around the body of their virtually comatose daughter in order to sway the government and the public into letting them keep her alive against her will. If your child lay dying in a hospital room, would you let camera crews in there to videotape her and broadcast her withered limbs and glassy stare all over the country? Her parents are guilty of stripping Terri of the peaceful, dignified death she obviously wanted. After she died, Terris sister actually had the fucking gall to say, May God give grace to our family. Im sorry, but grace is the one thing you obviously didnt give a shit about by turning your sister into a national spectacle that even eclipsed the Michael Jackson molestation trial- and thats saying a lot. And in the process of doing so, this country went completely ape-shit. People conducting around the clock vigils outside the Hospice where she was staying... issuing death threats and ultimatums... all the while, there are other people dying all over this country and around the world- other people these nut jobs would just assume kick in the groin than look in the eye- other people who actually want to live. So yes, I am glad she is finally dead. Perhaps now, Terri can finally get the peace she wanted, this country can get their heads out of their asses (mine included), and we can get on with more important things- like finding out which porno mags MJ was beating off to while fondling that little boy...alegedly.
