WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Virginia congressman will not apologize for writing that without immigration overhaul "there will be many more Muslims elected to office demanding the use of the Quran," his spokesman said. Republican Rep. Virgil Goode's letter to constituents also warns that without immigration overhaul "we will have many more Muslims in the United States." Spokesman Linwood Duncan said Goode's letter was written in response to complaints his office received about Minnesota Rep.-elect Keith Ellison's request to be sworn in using the Quran.
Ellison is the first Muslim to be elected to Congress.
In his letter, Rep. Virgil Goode wrote, "When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Quran in any way. The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Quran. We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country. I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped."

WOW.

Is it just me, or is this guy a complete racist? How can someone like this- who is an elected official- actually find it acceptable to spew forth such bullshit?! Dolts like him obviously have no idea what values and beliefs this county was founded on. If he did, he would realize that it is racist behavior such as what he is advocating that is causing the most damage to the values and ideals of the United States. If he doesnt want to use the Quran, fine! No one is asking him to! Just like no one- least of all Virgil Goode- should be asking Keith Ellison to use the Bible. Here is yet another example of a complete bigot using fear tactics to stir up the emotions of other bigots. How and why exactly is it dangerous for an elected official who happens to be Muslim to use the Quran during his swearing into Congress? I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States... So what? Why is that a problem? Are all Muslims terrorists? Virgil Goode would like you to believe so. Virgil Goode wants you to fear the idea of someone of a different faith being elected to office. What I fear is our government being co-opted by Christian zealots who seek to force their beliefs on the rest of the population. I am actually relieved that the citizens of Minnesota are progressive enough to elect someone who can counter the racist hicks that elected Virgil Goode. Does this man actually think that spreading hatred and fear of Muslims is in this countrys best interest? The last thing we need is for Muslims in the Middle East to think we are trying to stop them from entering our country. It never ceases to amaze me how un-christian these self proclaimed Christians are. NPR ran a news story the other day about a Pastor who was helping the families of immigrant workers who had been jailed and/or deported during a raid at a meat packing plant. The pastor, when asked why he was helping, simple said, I just ask myself- What would Jesus do? And he is absolutely right- Jesus would be helping those families. Well, someone else, after hearing the story, wrote in saying, Jesus would uphold the law, which would mean supporting the government in getting rid of the people who are here illegally.

So many Christians have truly lost their way.
